- 1. INSTALLATION OF PIM
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- o These installation instructions assume a working knowledge of the
- Atari Portfolio and DOS. The remainder of this documentation
- requires only a general familiarity with the operation of the Atari
- Portfolio.
-
- o The internal RAM drive (i.e. C:) should be configured to the minimum
- size, to have the maximum system memory, so that the built-in
- Portfolio applications can be used in conjuncton with PIM and its
- files. This is done by using the `FDISK 8' command (see page 37 in
- the Portfolio Owner's Manual).
-
- o All of the files, except .DOC files, should be copied to the root
- directory of an empty 128K RAM card. In addition to the PIM files,
- this disk contains AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and UPDT104.COM files.
- There should be no duplicate file names on the Portfolio, even on the
- C: drive.
-
- o The application is not `rommable' (i.e. the program only runs from
- system memory).
-
- o PIM can be started with a warm boot of DOS.
-
- o <Alt-X> returns to DOS from PIM. To re-enter PIM, either warm boot
- the system or type PIM when the directory that contains the PIM
- program and all of its associated files is the working
- directory. (i.e. All files used by PIM must be in the same directory
- as the executable file.)
-
- o All of the files are coded as Read-only. If it is necessary to
- reload the software, the memory card should be re-formatted. Delete
- will not erase a Read-only file and copy will not write over one.

- 2. PRODUCT OVERVIEW
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- o The Personal Information Manager (PIM) is a menu manager and forms
- based database management system designed specifically for the Atari
- Portfolio (Portfolio) which:
- - uses a hierarchical, menu based user interface, specified by text
- based menu specification files,
- - allows record search, retrieval and data entry via text based
- form specification files,
- - saves data in a data file associated with the form,
- - displays field, form, menu sensitive help and,
- - implements simple field edit checking.
-
- o PIM is the shareware version of a commercial product. This version
- is fully functional but works only with the specific menus and forms
- included with the product. PIM provides enhancements to the use of
- the Portfolio's built-in Address Book and Diary applications. All of
- the Portfolio's features remain fully functional.
-
- o PIM consists of three modes of operation, or 'Function' Managers:
- - Menu Manager
- - Form Manager
- - Services Manager
-
- o Keys common to all Managers:
- - <Esc> backs up to the previous screen until the Main Menu is
- reached. Keying <Esc> on the Main Menu does nothing.
- - <F1> or <Atari> accesses the Services Manager
- - <F2> accesses the help facility
- - <Alt-X> returns to DOS. To re-enter PIM, type PIM when the
- directory that contains the PIM program and all of its
- associated files is the working directory.
-
- o A similar product, PCPIM, is available for use on any IBM-compatible
- PC.

- 3. MENU MANAGER
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- o The PIM Menu Manager offers a hierarchical, menu based user
- interface. Each menu item may call a subsequent menu, a form or a
- built-in Portfolio application. PIM starts with the Menu Manager in
- control displaying the Main Menu.
-
- o Keys used by Menu Manager:
-
- - The up/down arrow keys move the cursor up and down through menu
- items. The cursor will wrap around (e.g. from top to bottom).
-
- - <Return> executes the highlighted menu item.
-
- - Pressing the first capital letter or number of the menu item
- description also executes the menu item.

- 4. FORM MANAGER
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- o The PIM Form Manager allows data entry, record search, storage and
- retrieval. The Form Manager is accessed when a form item is selected
- from a Menu.
-
- o A Look-Up Window is used to locate existing records that are to be
- viewed, changed or deleted. The cursor highlights the current
- look-up record. Cursor keys can be used to move up and down in the
- window, while <PgUp> and <PgDn> keys are used to move up and down six
- records at a time. The highlighted record is selected by pressing
- <Return>. When <Return> is pressed on the highlighted record, the
- corresponding data set becomes the active data set and is displayed
- in the active form.
-
- o Keys used by Form Manager:
-
- - Keying <Tab>or <Return> indicates that the field is completed and
- triggers any formatting or editing before moving to the next
- field. When the last field is completed, <Tab> or <Return> wraps
- around to the first field.
-
- - The arrow keys are used to move around within a field.
-
- - <Shift-Tab> serves as a `back-tab' function and moves to the
- previous field. It does not trigger formatting or editing
- functions.
-
- - <Home> goes to the first field in the form.
-
- - <End> goes to the last field in the form.
-
- - <ESC> exits the Form Manager.
-
- o A Look-up Window may also be used on selected fields to access
- reference data to be inserted into one or more fields of the active
- form. The function is activated by pressing the <F3> key while the
- cursor is over a field defined to support this function. This will
- present a Look-up Window with data records extracted from the
- specified Reference Look-up file. Pressing <Return> selects the
- record and fills in any corresponding fields in the active form.
-
- o Only one active form and one active data set are allowed at any one
- time. If the active data set has been revised from the corresponding
- record in the data set file, it must either be erased or saved to the
- data set file, using the Services Manager, before another active form
- or active data set can be activated.

- 5. SERVICES MANAGER
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- o The PIM Services Manager provides access to a fixed set of functions
- accessed at any time by the user from either the Menu Manager or Form
- Manager. The Services Manager is accessed by keying <F1> or <Atari>.
-
- o The Services Manager is used to select which service is desired, and
- to provided this service. The Services Menu currently supports:
-
- - File - The active data set is added to the appropriate file.
-
- - Erase - After asking the user for confirmation, the form is
- erased. This action has no affect on the data file.
- (i.e. It cannot be used to delete a data record. Data
- records can only be deleted through the appropriate menu
- item.)
-
- o <Esc> keyed from the Services Menu returns to the previous active
- form or the previous menu, whichever was active when the Services
- Menu was activated.
-
- o Files updated by PIM can be viewed by the Portfolio built-in
- applications but should never be updated using these applications.
- Files are protected so that only PIM can update them (i.e. they are
- set to Read-Only) by using a setting in the PIM.CFG file.
-
-
-
- 6. HELP FACILITIES
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- o <F2> accesses the Help Facility to display a context sensitive help
- description based on the current cursor position.
-
- o Pressing <F2> a second time displays general help for either the Menu
- Manager or the Form Manager.
-
-
-
- 7. TRANSACTION LOG
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- o Any new or changed records can be logged, depending on a setting in
- the PIM.CFG file. Transaction logging is turned off in the shareware
- version.
-
- o The purpose of the transaction log file is to maintain an audit
- trail. This log can also be used to help synchronize the Portfolio
- files with the files of another system.
